Gun Modifications/Parts/Accessories / KA thompson midcaps mini review
« on: December 07, 2008, 03:56:11 PM »
Okay, I special ordered from airsoft-unlimited.net two boxs of KA m1a1 Thompson mid-caps.

Brads customer service is great and he's a very helpful individual.

The magazines come in a box of 5.  They are approx 110 rounds sometimes you can squeeze a little more, but 110 is a good number. The box says lubricate before use but upon pulling my mags out I could tell they were pre-lubed. They feed great. I let loose on full auto and emptied the mid-caps without a miss-feed.

Fitting them into the receiver is varied. I have three cyma thompson and they fit in 2 of them with just alittle tap on the bottom to seat the mag. The third was very tight in the receiver and required a whack to seat them. Im thinking the is an issue with the gun, not the magazines, as the receiver is plastic it will wear so my other two may have been more worn down than the third. So far as I can tell thats there only flaw. Even that I was able to fix with a mini file and filing down the inner channel on the magazine, I can tell the difference it makes every pass over.

The magazines are built like MAG mid-caps.  With a U channel inside allowing more BBS to fit. The spring is held in place by a plastic lock bar that is held in place by a pin that goes thru the body. The seam isn't too bad along the sides of the body.

My pics made the magazine look way way worse than it is in real life. If your bold you can attempt to make 20 rounders.
I pulled the pin out and removed the lock Bar nd removed the spring. I then carefully pried open the casing with a flathead screwdriver. This did break part of the seams but it fits back together decently.

I cut about a 2" section out of the middle and then plastic welded the ends back together. More practice at this will result in a better finished product ims till debating about continuing with 4 other magazines....

I super glued the magazine back together and left it clamped to dry. Then i cut about 31/2 inches of the spring and replaced it. I now have an approx 85 round 20 round mid-cap. It needs alot of external finish work but it works and is pretty solid.

So go ahead and ask questions:

Gun Modifications/Parts/Accessories / Burkes M14 to Garand Conversion
« on: November 08, 2008, 03:06:11 PM »
Still need to paint it up and finish up the solution for the working bolt. But its externals are 99% done. I need to finish the little nub protruding from the front sight.

I did things a little differently than 2ndBat (ww2airsoft association). I basically followed the Ontario directions. I used a synthetic stock kit for the front and rear handguards. I had gotten a great deal on the entire set a while back and was hoping the synthetic stock would work for a Garand stock conversion. Unfortunaetly it didnt.

I used a Plastic Welding method I learned from Epyon on airsoftretreat. Its really simple, a soldering iron heated u will weld the plastic together. I worked the area welded over and over till I was sure I had asolid joint all the way thru. If I needed something filled, I used slivers from the front portion that was cut off the stock. This is a lot stronger than bondo or filler. Im tempted to actually try to weld the traditional Garand hump on the stock itself.

The thing that I think makes my Conversion a little bit special is the usage of the front of the M14 stock. I pried off the metal band and chopped the stock flush as you would with normal conversions. Instead of mounting the handguard band on the flushness I went back to the piece of stock I had discarded. The U-shaped protusions underneath the metal band fit perfectly into the Garand sling swivle piece. So I chopped off the U-shaped joint and Plastic welded it to my already cut down Stock. This allows everythign to mount very cleanly and solidly, especially in combination with the gas cyclinders set screw.. I have no reservations suing the front sling swivle.

Garand

Front end with #6-32 set screw holding it all together. Tap was cheap at Home depot

Butt with Garand plate. Rear of stock was plastic welded.

Side dots plastic welded and filled

Entire front end

Closeup of grips together

Plastic welded stock.

Gun Modifications/Parts/Accessories / Identify these 1 piece hopups
« on: September 01, 2008, 07:53:13 PM »
As title states I need these 1 piece hopups identified. I was going thru my parts bins and came across them. I think the one with the black gears is CA? Anyway who made them? Which is the best one? And where do they stand in rank in the 1 piece hopup scheme of things? And who makes the best one?

AEG Discussion / Inner barrel lenght: Short M16 barrel
« on: June 21, 2008, 01:45:39 PM »
I recently got a short m16 length 1 piece barrel off classifieds. Its the one where the flashider attatches right after the front sight. Since its used I have no idea what brand it is. Anyway I tried looking it up but want to double check what inner barrel length I need to buy, I know its not 509mm.

So what size inner barrel do I get?

Problem Solving / Gearbox Whine
« on: May 01, 2008, 06:03:34 PM »
Ive been experiencing some gearbox (v2) whine with a couple different gearboxes of mine. 1 of them I re-shimmed and the other two were rebuilt that I got off the forums. Im assuming this is becasue of shimming. When checking the shimming with all the screws in they seem fine, hardly any slop and they spin a full rotation or more with ease. Then i stick in the motor etc and no matter what i do the gearbox seems whiney/high pitched. Im curious of the proper placement while shimming the bevel gear. Im assuming the whine is coming from it not making proper motor contact, which isnt solved by motor height so it must be the shimming. What is the objective while shimming the bevel gear, to have it as close to the gearbox wall or farther away?

Also Im curious if running clone grips/motor plates would have any influence on this. Two guns have JG/echo1 grips, and the other has a clone miad.

Any and all help is appreciated

Clothing/Gear / Surefire bulb and battery replacement help
« on: April 24, 2008, 08:21:32 PM »
Looking to replace my Surefire G2's xenon bulb with an led one. Whats the best one to get, ebay has a bunch for around $20 and they say different things like P4 or G5, is there a difference? I want it to be as bright as possible. Also, like with aeg batteries i assume you pay for what you get when it comes to 123a cells?

Gun Modifications/Parts/Accessories / Echo1 RIS doesnt fit AGM M14?
« on: April 05, 2008, 05:05:54 PM »
I got an Echo1 ris off Airsoftgi (shoulda gotten the ebaybanned one w/trades) and it doesnt seem to sit well on the AGM M14. It mounts fine, but if you try to use the iron sights, you either have to raise the rear diaopetor (SP?) or you cant see the front sight. Im curious why this happened. Does anybody else have a RIS mounted on there M14, any issues or fixes?

Retail Stores / Where to find guarder m14 cut off without being raped
« on: January 10, 2008, 04:22:50 AM »
So Im looking for the guarder reinforced cut off levers for my m14's. Well Evike, and airsoftatlanta have them but shipping is UPS and $10. Thats ridiculous, they can drop it in an padded envelope and ship it usps for like $2.00 max.

Anybody know where else to find them, hopefully where shipping isnt ridiculous.

(blah blah blah, i understand gas etc, but theres no need to only ship a tiny ass part UPS ground)

Gun Modifications/Parts/Accessories / My Custom Midlength M16
« on: November 23, 2007, 10:18:29 PM »
Ive been wanting a Short m16 for awhile but decided to go midlength. I sourced some real steel parts and adapted them to fit the Handguards, I bought a RS triangle front mount with the hanguards. They are Cavalry Arms Midlength fat carbine type, they also dont taper, I learned that the hard way by buying Rock River arms midlength grips first.....they taper down like regular m16 grips. Heres the link for the RS grips: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Mid-Length-M4-Handguards-Black-p/handguards%20mid%20black%20m4%20oval.htm

I used the chopped front end from my MBK SIR shorty and used my noveske firepig, cause its the only flashider i have that fits on it. (clockwise threading). For the middle outer barrel piece i used an old blowgun tube. I had to dremel out the chopped front end sight tube and delta lock piece but it saves some weight as its aluminum. Pics make the front end look slightly dipped but its not.

Body is an AIM plastic body with 'light' full stock. It has a plastic butt rather than a metal one. I modded a M4 buffer tube sling mount plate so I have a single point sling to run with it. Pistol grip is a used TSar grip i got cheap off the forums.

I still need to put in a TB but im debating on switching out the gearbox first, because the current one is a full cylinder and the front end is M4 size. You guys think ill put too much strain on the gearbox just slapping in a M4 TB with the full cylinder?

Its wired to rear and I will either run my larger 8.4's or my mini 9.6s. Im also gonna make it so I can use my burst chip on there, one i get the nuts to learn to solder.

So what do you guys think?

Gun Modifications/Parts/Accessories / PAint stripping help -plastic body-
« on: November 02, 2007, 01:34:19 PM »
What would be best to strip paint off a plastic body? If it  was metal i would use whatever and just re-prime and stuff, but most of the solvents used for stripping, im sure, will eat up my plastic body. I was thinking acetone free nail polish remover?

Has anybody stripped a plastic body before?

Clothing/Gear / Low profile goggle options?
« on: October 25, 2007, 06:30:22 PM »
Looking for a pair of comfortable goggles. I have a slim face with a big shnoz. (no joke, seriously my honker is huge). Anyway I got a pair of ESS googles and they are to wide and high up on my face, they cover more of my forehead than anything. So Im looking for something a little smaller in profile. My other problem is....I wear glasses, which makes it even harder. I have apair of WileyX SG1's...but id prefer to have somethign I can wear my glasses under (not spending on ballistic precription lenses for wiley right now...too much money). Also in FL mesh goggles are out of the question, and they pretty much have to be sealed.

Any ideas? As always your help is much appreciated.

Clothing/Gear / Help identify M16 furniture
« on: October 05, 2007, 11:19:19 PM »
I came across this pic and I want to build somethign like this M16 shorty. Im guessing id have to get real handguards but what model are they exactly? Fat 20" or fat Midlength? And what full butt stock is that? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ive edited the picture and left a standard M16 in there for size reference. Also can I put RS stuff on a TM, i know the stock would require a kit but what about the handguards?

Clothing/Gear / Dummy grenade for loadouts
« on: September 15, 2007, 02:09:41 PM »
Does anybody use dummy grenades for loadouts? Ive got one of those smoek grenade bb loaders but its mainly just for show, same with my toy bayonet. So Im curious if anybody uses grenades. Im considering picking some up but I dont really want the weight of a deactivated dummy grenade (standard load is 4 for US infantry correct?) I have yet to find anything cheap or worthy of ordering.

Anybody have any link to viable options?

« on: June 21, 2007, 07:09:15 PM »

Gun Modifications/Parts/Accessories / R7 Project #1 R16A4
« on: June 09, 2007, 09:06:45 PM »
Turned my R7 into a M16A4 today. I have an airtronics burst chip, i just gotta put connectors on it then its going into this guy. Eventually ill get around to reshimming the gb and putting a TM Full Cylinder with a tm or vfc spring and better piston in it. I did put in a  509mm TB today with a gaurder 50% bucking tho. So thats done. I never seem to have enough time to crack open the gearbox's.

Sorry for the crappy pic ill take better ones tomorrow.

Clothing/Gear / Army equiptment d-rings, how to attatch?
« on: May 27, 2007, 12:05:14 PM »
Ive got a lot of gear that has d-rings on it. But the majoritiy of it, well actually all of it, minus combat suspenders, are all d-ring to d-ring. How do Army GI's attatch stuff togetehr in that case. Example LBV88 ahs d-rings on the middle back peice. You could attatch the top side of the butt back to these d-rings to help spread the weight instead of having a full butt pack hanging off the belt. But the issue belt back has d-rings....s0 its d-ring to d-ring.

Does the Army issue any kind of connector to put them together? Or is it more or less use your ingenuity? (zipties)
