This is a preliminary post for a project that will take a while. While I was away for spring break, my team decided to make multicam mandatory. Now, I can get a full set for $200, but I will have to not eat for a few months. And then I will have to buy $150 dollar molle plate carriers, and $25+ pouches. Being the cheap person that I am, I came up with an idea. Multicam fabric, directly from crye, is less than $9 per yard. I will take a cheap set of surplus 3-color bdu's that I don't use, rip them apart into pieces, trace those onto crye fabric, and sew my own bdu's. I estimate that I will need about 4 yards of fabric for the base bdu's ($40), and less than a yard of heavy fabric for the knees and elbows ($10) The remaining heavy fabric will go to making a mich helmet cover, kneepad covers, and a boonie hat. Depending on how that works out, I will buy more heavy fabric and make my own molle vest and pouches. I will update this thread with pictures of the process, and later will scan the design of the ripped-up 3-color so if anyone else wants to make their own, they don't need to rip up bdus to do it. I expect this to take about a month, depending on how often I will be able to work on it. At the end, I'll post a comparison of my bdu's with the skd multicam bdu's.
