The NCO Club / Re: Building a computer for the first time
« on: July 25, 2012, 09:02:01 PM »
Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates, I'm still waiting to be able to order everything but I'm definitely still gonna build it. I've made a couple of changes to the build list including an ASRock Extreme4 Z77 motherboard and a possibly a 2gb version of the 7770, I also switched the ram out for Corsair Vengeance. Aside from that everything is still as posted. I'm hopefully going to get everything ordered by the end of the week depending on when newegg restocks the gpu.

I was at work on my phone, so I couldn't really give a longer answer.

In regards to the power supply....

When they say it's a 450w power supply, that's peak.  Meaning best case scenario, it will give you 450w.  Even in a best case scenario, it's not going to give you 450w forever.  Think of it this way.  Your car gets 20mpg.  You need to drive 19 miles.  Are you going to try to do it on 1 gallon of gas?  Even if it did, 20w is VERY little margin for error.  Power calculators rely largely on averages and educated guesses for most of the minor components such as memory or case fans.  They aren't going to be off by more than a volt in most cases but that adds up quick when you are leaving that little margin for error.  Is your memory 1.6v or 1.8v, etc.  Not to mention what if you decide to buy a second hard drive or a newer video card in 6 months.  Do you really want to buy a new power supply too?

That's about $10 more than what you picked and gives you some breathing room.  There's no reason to skimp on that unless you are trying to build a low heat/high efficiency system.  Which you aren't.

Thank you very much for elaborating, I just swapped them out on my build list. Sorry if I'm being a pain, I'm very OCD about stuff like this and just wanted to make sure I can learn as much as possible from this experience.

Luckily I most likely won't be playing multiplayer other than Minecraft. I suppose I should have clarified, I won't be playing any triple-A titles any time soon, mostly just Linux games. Rather I would like to have the option to play larger, more graphically intensive games without having to worry about my computer being incapable of it. I'll try to arrange a wired connection, but want Wi-fi as a fallback.

As far as usage goes, it will be used for gaming and to be the powerhouse computer within my household for tasks that the outdated laptops currently used cannot handle. While I'm far from an expert with Linux, I'm fairly proficient in it and have utilized it on multiple computers for a couple of years now. Any recommendations on a good Ubuntu supported PCI-e wireless card for around the same price? Any advice on a power supply within the budget would also be much appreciated. Also, not to contradict you considering I'm still a relative novice, but every wattage calculator I've ran the build through has said that I will only require 430 watts, mostly due to the 7770 using very little power, any reason why more power is needed?

Here are the parts I was looking at, any suggestions? My budget is $800 and I am planning on running Ubuntu rather than windows. I've already checked the compatibility of the wireless card and graphics card with Linux, and as far as I can tell all of the parts are compatible but as this is my first time I figured I'd ask. Any suggestions of alternative parts would also be great. Thanks

Edit: I swapped the PSU out for a 600W Corsair Builder Series.

That looks pretty awesome! Nice to see someone actually building something, this place is turning into a graveyard of unfinished designs. ::)

I was more saying that Bioware had been indoctrinated, although if they end up doing anything, they'll probably end up using that as an excuse. The only good side to the ending is the Hitler reaction videos  :'(

Hey guys! Here's something I've been working on...

Can you say PDW?

The stock is not done, but everything else is working like a charm.

That. Is. Awesome.  :o

The NCO Club / Re: What did you get for Christmas?
« on: December 26, 2011, 04:05:53 PM »
I got a KWA USP Tactical, a 23" LG IPS monitor, the Steve Jobs biography, and a crapload of candy. I'm gonna be getting a Galaxy Nexus on the 30th and I'll be ordering a few things from ASGI this week. Overall a great Christmas  ;D

The tool you said you couldn't figure out the purpose of is the key for the lockout device, in the magwell there should be two tiny holes that match up with the key.

It's pretty awesome, basically Minecraft on iOS and on the moon. No multiplayer though  :'(

The NCO Club / Re: Anyone have any experience with coilguns?
« on: September 10, 2011, 05:08:54 PM »
Thanks man, I'll definitely update it once I get some work done on it. It's most likely gonna be an ongoing project though. I'll probably get the bearings and some capacitors in a few days so I can size up power requirements and barrel size. If all goes well I'll have a functional prototype by new years and a finished body for it by spring.

Bolt action? Very cool.

I really want to see how this project turns out. I didnt have any pictures on my computer, but I emailed my teacher in the hopes that he still has a picture of it.

EDIT-

I cant believe I still have this thing! It was hidden away in my garage.....to save the world from its evil. But here it is:

That thing looks pretty evil, like some kinda improvised guerilla weapon  ;D And yea I've decided to go with bolt action because muzzle loading isn't very impressive, and decided against breech loading after I realized how close the design was to a bolt action. It's probably gonna be a straight pull AK style bolt in the first few iterations and eventually get reworked into a traditional bolt action. Mags will probably have pull pins on them that must be removed to start feeding, both as a safety feature and to simplify the design.

I built a small gauss weapon for a physics project in high school.

I'll post a picture if I can find some.

I had eight rare earth magnet bars encircling a little barrel, which were all housed in pretty substantial plastic pipe. I had two of those 12.8 volt batteries hooked up to it but found I only needed one. It shot ball bearings.

The weapon kind of destroyed itself after a few days. The plastic pipe became very distorted form the magnets pushing against each other, and the whole thing was being held together by zip ties.

It worked pretty well, and got me an A, so I was happy with it.

Like I said, I'll post pictures if I still have them.

Sounds pretty sweet. I'm planning on using ball bearings too, most likely the bearings used for slingshots. The plan is for it to be mag fed with a simple bolt mechanism to facilitate loading and a permanent magnet incorporated into the chamber area to prevent the bearings from rolling out of the barrel. I haven't decided on a power source yet but I know that it will be capacitor driven rather than direct from the battery. I definitely want to eventually make it a self contained portable unit once the mechanism is reliable and proven.

I'm not charging into it blindly, I've done my research and have built a few electromagnets before. I just thought that since there are a large amount of members with engineering and electrical knowledge, maybe someone had built one before and would share anything that they learned that isn't nessecarily common knowledge. Sorry if I came off sounding like some little kid expecting you guys to explain everything, that wasn't my intention.

I'm looking at building a fairly small scale coilgun in my spare time and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them or anything similar (gaussian, railgun, etc.) I understand the concept of them and have a rough idea in my head for the design but I figured there are probably forum members that are more knowledgeable in this area and might be willing to give me some advice  :-*
Thanks,
Dakota

Evike has them on pre-order for $180, mine came direct from ICS.

180? That's waaaaaay lower than I was expecting! I may have to pick one up now  ;D

AEG Discussion II / Re: G36 Magwell Pin Question
« on: July 17, 2011, 12:01:03 AM »
On my JG G36C, one of the sides of the pin had an allen screw hole that you just unscrewed leaving a little nipple looking nut, and then you just push the pin out with a relatively large amount of force. Be very careful with the pin though because the metal is very brittle and prone to shearing the threads off. I've already gone through two of them from minimal disassembly. Hope this helps  ;D
