Hey guys, It's been a while since I've posted here, as I've been active mainly on other sites.

Anyways, I've decided that i'm going to be starting a G36 project, and I'll really like some opinions from other airsofters.

My first rifle was a TM G36C, and I loved the quality of the plastic furniture on the TM, as well as the internals. However since this will be a custom project, with my own internals, I was wondering if someone could tell me how the externals on other brands, including clones compare to the TM furniture. Bonus points if you've actually owned a TM as well as other brands.

TL;DR: I want to grab a G36 that has externals that rival the TM.

Comparing the externals of TM and the latest generation JG's... the G36 is miles a head of the TM.

for how long has the latest gen JG been out now? I'm not worried about the internals, just the body.

CA and Ares take the cake on the externals department by a wide margin. Their nylon fiber is far better than the plastic TM and JG use. They have a metal barrel/gas system assembly vs plastic on the E1/JG. The Army code receivers are also very nice.

The internals on the CA's suck balls just so you know. They are plagued with electrical issues.

It's ok, I'm planning on throwing my own GB into it anyways. I just wanted to make sure I'm picking up a G36 that can take a beating on the outside.

Yeah, CA is the way to go then. Be aware the Star/Ares bipod front ends have a habit of cracking in half at the front due to the bipod design. It's only the bipod hand guard, the others are fine.

What about the SRC models? A friend of mine has one and it seemed pretty solid, but I don't know much about them other than they have metal charging handles and hop up units.

CA definitely has the best externals (kinda ironic with their craptastic internals), Army Code's even better if you have that needle of a chance of finding them.

I second XM, the TSD/SRC externals are very meh; when I had one they were very solid and looked alright, but it always felt like I was holding an airsoft gun made out of something between plastic and the nylon fiber stuff. The Ares externals are very nice. I can't vouch for the CA externals, but I've never found a CA with stock wiring or an unmarred selector plate contact.

Definitely go CA or Ares for externals, but be ready for some heavy duty internal upgrading. A friend of mine got the Ares G36E and its been down for major internal failures longer than he's been able to use it on the field

I have a JG G36 I use as a project gun, and my gas assembly and hop up unit (which lock together?) were both plastic. First, my gas tube assembly literally split in half, because the quality of plastic was horrible. So I got a CA gas tube assembly (made out of metal), then the part of the hop up made out of terrible plastic broke. So, I ended up getting the 5KU metal hop up for my g36, and I don't have any complaints with it anymore.

Also, my g36's stock broke (plastic), and I got it without a handguard, so I used a piece of PVC to hold the battery in.

Long story short, I love my JG G36 like no other, but if you want durability, go with another brand.

I just picked up one the Umarex branded Ares EBB G36's. Externals aren't as nice as CA or Army code but it's shooting 490fps @ 1200rpm. Through in a 6.03 tightbore and a PDI W-hold bucking and it shoots fantastic. However it's got quite a bit of proprietary parts that you can't find replacements for so keep that in mind. The bipod handguard does seem sturdier than my older one however so they have done some improvements.

AFAIK the original Star/Ares are built on the same platform but the EBB one I just got most definitely is not. It's got a proprietary outer barrel, receiver, and front end. Not sure about the handguard, stock, and carry handle/scope but they look the same.

Yeah, EBB wasn't exactly a selling point for me, but the price was right.
