Hades Arrow mortar
« on: March 06, 2012, 12:08:58 PM »

in case you guys missed this one..

its a co2 charged water rocket with a burst disk that is poped by a pin in the bottom of the tube
MSRP around $190 w/2 rounds
really cool as a toy/back yard plinker, looks like a LOT of fun

however my option is it has no place on the game feild.
rigid plastic body, hard rubber tip to protect the valve, hard plastic fins, over all weight of 240G-thats 8X more then a nerf
you hear it hit that tree... taking 1/2 pound of hard plastic to the head=no good

Besides freaking out golfers as they line up their shots across from my fence, I don't see many practical applications for this.

Water bottle rockets are popular in science classes and very easy to make. To be honest, I think that many people considered making one of these a long time ago(at least I did), but didin't due to the risk. 240g at 20m/s gives about 96J, close to a rimfire .22 short(aboout 110J). At 40m/s it is four times more, enough to cause seriuos trauma, even with a larger area of impact (nose cone). But what I am really concerned about are the fins.

I mean, really, with all the safety talk considering launchers, all the precautions taken by launcher builders, all the soft foam and nerf ammo, and now they come up with this? It's like taking a real sword to a wooden sword sparring match.

I've always wanted to make one of these...

For the ammo I was thinking soft heavy foam in front, light foam in back, BBs in the middle. The two halves lose energy at different rates, rain of BBs!!! ( I have a bunch of cheap-o BBs lying around)

I want one really bad, but am having a REALLY hard time figuring out how it could be implemented safely. I just don't see it happening. It's a cool prop though, but unfortunately, cool props don't always belong on the field.

^sencond... Im part of a mortar crewmember and I fire the real thing making me really want one for airsoft.... But at the same time... The fields I play are way to large and wooded for even shooting this thing. Theres 2 things stopping me from getting one of these, Saftey and replacement part and accessories.

It really is a shame. More and more I'm becoming interested in playing as some type of special weapon crew member or at least something more than the usual rifleman, gunner, or sniper.

240 grams ?!! That is very dangerous ammo to be launching at people.

Everyone says it's dangerous...ok I'll take you word but at least someone's pushing the ceiling trying to advance the sport. So put your head to the mat and grind out the next step instead of waiting for it.

Gunfighters has been producing safe artillery rounds for a few years now.

I have been using artillery for years. Tennis balls are my favorite ammo, cheap and abundant. I can launch as many as twelve in one shot to bombard a target. Thing I like most about them is they can survive a pressure spike upwards of 800psi. Nerfs are great, but they do not like high pressure cannons. (I turn them inside out.)

I get 300 shots with a 20lbs CO2 tank. I have shot about (2) trash bag sized tennis balls in 3 hours. (?? 400 tennis balls ??)
To get ammo back after an event. I cut open a ball, and put a $20 bill inside, mix it in with the rest. Let the players know.

I built my first "launcher" in 1988 when I was 17 for paintball. It's been pretty much the same argument since then. Safety is paramount. Which means lightweight rounds, which means simple. If it's not simple then you are either going to spend a FORTUNE buying it because some else made it. Or DIY and spend hours assembling one round. In the last 20+ years I have not seen anything but simple safe rounds.

I cannot share my knowledge and use of Pyro to anyone under the age of 18, or on an airsoft forum. It is not tolerated.

I like this idea and the whole "tennis mortar" idea as well

Nice m3a1 "grease gun"! Is that your protection when a squad of guys run at you because they're the only people still in the game and you spray them all? Or do you aim the artillery cannon and knock them off their feet? Btw nice cannon ever try like those hallow kids plastic balls that you can buy that are the same size as tennis balls?

I wouldn't use it in the field unless firing 'modified' ammo. Anyways it looks like it would be fun to mess around with.
