I just made the most impulsive purchase of my life just now :)

Yes, even more impulsive than my real 91/30.  I thought about that one for at least 5 minutes before I bought it.

Is it normal for the magazine base plate to pop open when the magazine is empty?

Nope, I haven't had that happen on mine before.

I noticed that mine does not have a catch for the base plate in the same location as the real Mosin.  It seems to hold via friction when the mag is wound but otherwise it just falls open.  I wonder if I'm missing a piece.

There's no catch on mine either, it's held in by a friction clip in front of the hole in the rear, but behind the winding wheel. There's a little silver metal clip in there. Unscrew the screw holding it in place, pull it out, and squeeze it together just a little bit, it should keep it held in place better.

Here's the retaining clip:

Thanks for the tip!  That was an easy fix.  Shoulda been obvious too, though I only got a chance to rip the rifle out of the box and glance at it over lunch before heading back to work!  I can't wait to try it out, wish I had my propane adapter with me.

My complaints so far: It's not heavy enough to require a special stance or the sling grip to hold a steady sight picture.  Also, it's not soaked in cosmoline.  I want my money back!  I kid...

Lol, I feel the same way about the weight. The weight and balance is thrown off if you're used to the real Mosin, but the hopefully upcoming real wood model will mostly fix that.

When I finally got around to testing mine, it had a gas leak that typically starts when the rifle is fired.  I sent it back, they sent me a new one and I had the exact same problem with the new one.  I've been using green gas as I seem to have lost my propane adapter.  I wonder if the silicon oil in Green Gas is somehow screwing up the action of the valve.... But that would be incredibly strange as I would think any lubricant would only reduce stiction problems with the valve.

Strange. Where does it seem to be leaking from? I've put a few hundred rounds through mine at this point using 100% propane, lubing it every 10 fills or so, and I've still got no leaks.

The gas leaks out of the barrel, and the leaking sound actually stops if I plug the barrel with my finger.

Update:

I'm happy to report that the leaking stopped after injecting some silicon oil and putting another 60 or so shots through it.  The problem did not stop abruptly...it tapered off, as if it were getting through a break-in period.

The hop up adjustment screw was another interesting thing... It seems that it has to be nearly all the way unscrewed to give a flat trajectory, at which point it's probably wise to take additional measures to prevent it from falling out during a game (such as e-tape over the screw or teflon tape on the screw).  The hopup also took some breaking in before it shot strait, but it shoots quite nice after the break-in!

I think if I could do this over again, I'd wait until the next generation of the PPS Mosin Nagant... but I suspect I'll have plenty of fun with this one too.

They were alot smarter on the mag system on this one, On my Zeta labs spring mosin, there was a red string with a little ball at the end that you had to pull on to compress the spring, load it up, then let the string go. The only problem was that the string would hang out of the bottom of it and could easily get snagged on something and break (happened to mine). Then you would have to take the gun completely apart and rewire it with a new string... not fun. This one seems like a MUCH better option than the Zeta labs version.

Yeah, that sounds kind of terrible. This only uses part of that system, haha.
