Hopup Contamination (BAR-10)

(1/1)

pyrochris:
Has anyone had this problem before?

I somehow managed to get a mix of grease and metal filings to completely cover the chamber portion of the hopup bucking on my BAR-10 gspec.  The piston head and everything in the bolt look clean, so I'm suspecting that the action causing debris and grease to travel to the hopup is external to the bolt (such as the bolt and receiver).

If anyone can offer me any insight I will be forever grateful.  Or at least grateful for a little while. :)

Yes I remember this problem when I first had it. It looks like your cylinder is not totally aligned properly. What is happening is that the nozzle of your cylinder head is scraping material off of the hop-up chamber as you work the action. The metal used in hop-up chamber is very soft (relatively speaking) and makes debris that looks like your picture here.

I would start by opening your hop-up chamber and inspecting the nozzle port (where the nozzle enters the chamber) for any signs of noticeable wear. If you see obvious scratches, then you know its the nozzle scraping against the hop-up chamber. You should also be able to feel a little bit of resistance every time you push the last few centimeters of the bolt into the receiver when loading the next shot.

I forget what was the cause in my rifle since it was so long ago. I do remember however that I fixed the problem by enlarging the hop-up nozzle port with a round file. The better solution would be to of course correct the misalignment of the cylinder. That will be a bit tougher lol.

I remember having several problems with my rifle when it was relatively stock and this was one of them. I ended up quickly replacing a lot of parts in my gun, so I never actually corrected the misalignment. Everything worked itself out when I built a "PDI 10" lol. In other words, most of the parts had been replaced with PDI aftermarket parts.

The fact that there is debris on your hop-up bucking does not entirely indicate that your gun is shooting excess grease. Lastly, this is something I would look into quickly, it seems your gun has a really bad alignment issue if that is really the case. This problem is not the end of the world, but I would imagine it will hurt precision until it is corrected. We all know that we can use as much precision as we can get in our BASRs

We went thew this a few times in the early days here on in the Snipers Perch.  I think my problem went away with a new nozzle, laylax IIRC .

Thanks for the advice (a month later...haha).  I do believe the issue was caused by a misalignment either with the hopup chamber or the bolt itself.  Upon closer inspection I found that my bolt handle was a bit loose and my hopup chamber wasn't fully closed (visible gap between the seems) due to the aftermarket barrel I had in there.  I'm assuming those could both cause huge alignment problems.

I must not have been paying too much attention to detail when I first put things together.

I tightened the bolt handle and put a TM barrel/hopup assembly in place what I had.  So far, so good.
