I find that piles of fire wood are the best way to go, they are realistic and would actually stop real rifle rounds (10+ inches of hard wood will stop most stuff). They are simple to built (just a stack of logs against a tree).

I have found over the years that hasty fighting positions are generally more fun than multiple huge fortifications. I would do something like two small log pill boxes and a half dozen pit blinds (a 5 foot long pit that you lay in with your gun resting on a log in front of you).

I need to get around to taking pictures of some of this stuff.

At one time this was a dirt wall with sandbags topping it, sandbags don't really do anything.

The coffin blind should be a tad deeper, it got filled in over the years. Ideally you should be able to curl up a bit and be level with the ground or be just a little bit lower.

The field is full of these little coffin blinds, they are normally set off to the side of a foot trail, if the person hiding in it keeps their head down you wouldn't know that anyone was there until it was to late. Great little ambush points.

i'll have to dig some of those coffin blinds. really limited on space because yes its in the middle of the woods, but it is also a 4-wheeler trail area and i don't want to have to ride around a bunch of different things. but those should do the trick for my. now if i could only find a spot with no roots!

the best thing to use is sand bags. they can be put almost anywhere and are pretty cheap to make.
ya they are cheap as dirt  haha ;D

I was thinking thinking of something along the lines of "tarps"

With some cheap nylon rope and some properly colored canvas, plastic tarps, or shelter-halves you could set up a fort wherever there is a stand of trees and change locations for different days, or modify existing/hard structures with diferent lines of fire, rooms, etc.

Just becareful how you string the nylon rope, you don't want anyone to injure themself.

The problem with tarp is that it is easy to shoot through, so after a few games you end up with large holes/tears all over the tarp. Shelter halves and canvas are pretty good, but can get costly if bying in bulk. For ease of construction and price, below ground cover is the best bet. I've even seen whole trench networks built with fortificationsbuilt into the trench. It's a CQC nightmare, and one of the most fun places I've ever played.

I've personally built a network of vietcong style tunnels (they're just trenches with plywood on top that we call tunnels) and bunkers that are dug into the steep slope we play on. Some unfinished mine shafts are also fun to fortify and play with but I can't imagine that there are many people with an old mineshaft in their backyard.

That's a very dangerous place to play. There's many stories of people messing around mine shafts, and then dying due to a number of things happening. I wouldn't recommend you play around there.

Let me clarify, the "mine shaft" for lack of a better word is a horizontal tunnel that was drilled maybe three feet into the side of a hill. There is no vertical pit of death and it is not deep enough to where we would risk a cave-in. It is probably better described as a shelf cut into the side of the hill. Sorry for the mix-up.

Oh, ok, nvm. It's just...My father lost a friend when he was gowning up due to an incident, and he likes to remind me of that often (Since there are gravel pits and sinkholes all over town, and pretty much all of MN.)
Best of luck!

Back on topic....

You could combine trenches and bunkers to make a bunker system. We did that. Very Awesome looking.

Look to history for a bit of help. The Vietcong, The Maginot Line, World War 1. All had trench systems and extensive fortifications.

But the germans just breezed past the maginot line. So oif you build a trench-bunker complex, make sure to protect your flanks.

How big would you have to say a game should be to the point where it is worth having a large trench system such as the ones you guys are talking about? Let alone, any form of bunker!

I think he means Freight Cars. Awesome, but costly.
My field made an underground tunnel system going the length of each of the fields out of large culvert pipes. Really helps out.

tired, sweaty, hot...but i just got done digging my own grave. lol. its enough for me to lay down in like i'm dead....cover the top with wood, have a buddy put dirt/leaves on top and wait for the enemy to get right on top of ya. then pop out and nail him. now dig one more and put up some noisy tripwires
