Retrofitting an Aeg Hop-Up to fit my Bar 10. Possibe?
« on: June 30, 2009, 10:50:22 AM »

Okay here's a newb question;

Recently I got fed up with my mp5 hop-up unit. Having an AK hop-up unit around, I dremeled it to fit, and while it's not finished, I can pretty much say that it will work just as well as in an AK because I haven't had to dremel away any essential parts. Moral of the story, I'm confident in my abilities to retrofit hopups.

Now I want a smaller hop-up unit for my Jg Bar 10, because I like the smaller (diameter wise) of the real steel Remington 700 (which would require a smaller  hop-up due to the smaller barrel diameter)... I've noticed that the L96 hop-up unit is much smaller, but I would have to incorporate a new cylinder nozzle. So what about AEG hop-ups? Can they be tuned to work as effectively as Bolt-Action with some modding? Right now I'm thinking about an M14/AUG hop-up, but ideas are needed too...(the only hop-ups I've ever handled in person are the Mp5, Ak, Bar 10, and L96. All clones by the way)

Thanks,

Dune

P.S. I'm also thinking of making a new barrel out of an aluminium bat, seeing as I don't have access to a lathe and that is the only tapered metal object around...

Not to shoot down your ideas or anything, but It will be veryy hard to do the hop up unit, much less make a barrel out of a bat without a lathe. The barrel will be impossible, and it isn't plausable to fit an AEG hopup on a VSR type barrel. Whats wrong with the orig hopup unit? Without any tools this project is virtually impossible. Ane why make an aluminium barrel? It will be really bad.

Im sure he meant outter barrel, which would be fine.

OP: The JG BAR10 hop up is one of the best hop ups IIRC, id leave it as is.

The VSR hop up is one of the better designs out there.  If you don't want the tapered barrel, I believe PDI makes a couple different outer barrels you can look into.

Ohhh, sorry. I thought he meant IB. But still, who would want to replace the VSR-10 hop up.

I do realize that the hop-up is good, and the only reason I'd want to replace it, or modify it for that matter, it to fit inside a smaller diameter barrel. Only wishful thinking though.

You could look at PDI's L96 chamber for an AEG IB...That is by far the best chamber I have ever used...and I'm now a hard-core VSR-10 guy.  But that would be the best bet...

Here is a link:

Good luck with the mod though.  You should just get an L96 to start.  But, if you want to be different as it seems, modify a type-10 w/L96 chamber and you would make some headway IMO...I would love to see it~

Is it really worth all the trouble just for a barrel that is a couple mm smaller? If it is, more power to ya and I'd love to see the results, but I would'nt reccomend doing it unless the gun is strictly for show purposes. It wil #1 be hard to get it to perform well, #2 will be weak as in it would be pretty easy to break something while skirmishing, #3 you won't be getting a large return. I could see custom building something like a stock, maybe a reciever, but a barrel? It's just not worth it imo.

Just my .02 though :)

Couldn't you use this?
http://www.wgcshop.com/pcart/shopper.php?itm=LAY-PT-PSS10ASC_srch_air%20seal

You could, but that's the Laylax NEO chamber which is the exact size of the stock type-10 chamber.  It just has AEG cuts in it to accept ONLY an AEG inner barrel.  I think the OP wanted a smaller chamber.  I don't completely understand why, but to each his own.

This is why I recommended the PDI L96 Chamber, which is smaller, but still would be quite a bit of work getting it right for a type-10.

Okay thank you all for you suggestions and links... I will use these resources while trying to make my Bar 10 stand out and perform well at the same time.

Also, I'm currently cleaning my friends clone l96 so I do have the hop-up unit on hand, and I will say it would take at least a custom cylinder head, some dremeling, drilling holes in the barrel and some other work to make it fit, but it is definitely is possible with a lot of work.

I'm leaving soon for a month or so, so this thread can die.
