Idea about gearbox sound cancellation.
« on: July 03, 2009, 06:25:22 PM »

Okay Idea: Analyze the sound coming from an AEG when fired, and then reverse (make the opposite, I don't know the technical term) of that sound using an audio program and play that sound from a custom speaker setup whenever the gun if fired, to basically cancel out the sound. Will someone tell me why this can't work to a certain extent?

It might work... noise cancelling headphones do the same thing.  They have tiny microphones on the headphones, and make sounds to cancel out the noise.  It would be pretty complicated though, and I don't know how well it would work with something that loud.

wont work, you would get the desired result only in front of the speaker.

Surround Sound anyone?  ;D

But still, if you pointed the speaker towards your intended target, it could possibly be more difficult for them to identify where the bb's are coming from.

New shims? You'd probably be able to get a whole new gun with the cost of a system, if it could work...

Any idea how I'd get an audio program and custom speaker around my V2 gearbox?

It will just create more sound, and how would you be able to make it sound exactly parallel to the rof?

It'll be too difficult.  Each time the gearbox fires, it will be slightly different wavelength, so getting something that is universally canceled via disruption is almost impossible o.o

Well at first lets say the sound looks like this:   _.-''''-._         so th opposite would be:  '-.___.-'   And thus both at the same time would just be a loud sound.  It would be like '""""' and _____  at the same time.   Just like airsoftmaster said, it would either create equal amounts or more sound.

Way too many variables present. There are so many frequencies of the sound coming from the gearbox (piston, gears, motor) and even the sound coming out of the barrel and vibration of the receiver comes into affect. In short, it wouldn't be worth all the effort.

Okay, well thank you all for the information, I obviously didn't know enough about sound waves to know that this is would practically work.

Thanks!
