ICS compatability questions.
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:39:12 PM »

Well i am looking at buying a ICS M4 and i see they use the tabs on the upper reciver to connect to the lower. I hate this with a passion, all of the tabs ive had broke. Could i replace the metal body ? Also i may replace the hop up, but i dont know how to, i saw xaviers guide and the pics on the hop up are down. What do i need to file ? And finally does it have a working bolt catch  ?

No, the ICS gearbox is only compatible with the ICS receiver.  You don't have to worry about the tabs as they are made of metal.  No it does not have a working bolt catch.  Xavier still has all the photos posted on his website, you could check that out; but I don't see the need to replace the ICS hop-up unit.  Personally, I prefer the ICS design over the TM one.

The tabs will be fine.  Most of the other AEG's that use the tabs don't have the split gearbox as well.  So when you go to hinge open the receiver, the tabs have to bend outwards to clear the gearbox shell.  On the ICS, the upper gearbox moves with the upper receiver, and just slides out.

There's no stress on the tabs on an ICS so, unless you are doing something stupid, they will be fine.  I've never seen an ICS M4 with broken tabs.  Metal or plastic receiver.

the two piece gearbox is a great design.  you will love it.  but just remember that ics' are best upgraded with ics parts and that some pieces should only be ics.  i.e. hop up unit, air nozzle, tappet plate, anti reverse latch, STOCKS, and anything that is NOT attached with a ris/ras system...atleast from my exp.

Yes you can and must mod anything to fit. I've never had a non-ICS part fit without modification, ever.

Like what?  I have had no issues mounting a JBU RIS, using Modify cylinder parts, Promy barrel and KWA bucking.

I'm talking externals here. Exception being the flash-hider I've never had a grip, mag release, stock, or anything fit.

^Interesting, I've had plenty of stuff fit without mods. Several different RAS systems (not just JBU), a couple grips, and four/five different outer barrels. But likewise, I've never had a stock or mag catch fit.
