Lol, thanks ;D

Well no luck on the grouping test, the weather sucks. Got a mail from the post that the chrono got taxed (20%) and should arrive by Friday. Bitter-sweet news really.

I decided to change the hop-up rubber and I took a few internals pictures along the way:

The outer barrel is held on by six m3 grub screws. Making a thread that size is still a bit too difficult for me (not my lathe also).

The madbull barrel is a PSG-1 type which has a cut on the top side. That was later fixed with putty.

The internals are designed by me (went through some pictures of the VSR-10 internals and fitted the dimensions and also changed some parts completely) .

The trigger mechanism is also different, it's basically just a piston sear that is disconnected by a trigger sear, a kind of lever. Simple and reliable. The spring guide pin is fixed to the trigger.

Nice build + Great craftsmanship.... (seriously)

you need to be taken down a notch.

That trigger mech is so different and unique... I've never seen anything like it before!!!

I love how you designed it with a simple & reliable (2) part sear where the trigger releases the piston sear.... (kind of like a lever) BRILLIANT!!

But that fixed spring guide stopper is pure SICK GENIOUS!!!

I'm not sure the internets could handle that.

Ontopic: AWESOME build! I really, really like your take on the hopup. Does the inner barrel fit only 1 way in it or does it rotate and needs precise assembly?

There cannot be enough DIY airsoft rifle builders, it's like those shed built cars, often too insane for a big company to make.

Thanks everyone :)

@Noobie, are you being sarcastic? You sound way too much impressed for a skilled builder/modder. :) I've seen your BAR-10 project, gotta love those groupings!

Here is a similar trigger design, that I based mine from (the picture is not mine obviously):

Otherwise the VSR-10 design is a pretty good one and there isn't much to improve, much of my own changes were just personal preference.

@Maximus86, the barrel just slides in, it has to be rotated to align it. There could be a notch at the top of the aluminum ring, where the grub screw would align it. Since it's always me who is assembling the mechanism, I don't need that.

Aren't you concerned about damaging the barrel with the screws, if they are not 100% correctly aligned with the hole in the barrel?

(no critique, but out of curiosity)

You mean the screws for hop-up adjustment?
Not really since there is around 2mm ob hop-up rubber in between (around the nub) and adjustment is step by step (1 turn and see, quarter turn and see ...) and before the screws would damage the barrel, there would be way too much hop-up. Also there is around 40° (20 on each side) of "safe area" in which the screws are still above the barrel hole. However I did destroy (ripped the part near the back) the last hop-up rubber because I forgot to unscrew those two screws before disassembly.

Maybe not the best solution for a production gun (there would need to be a limiter on the screws) but more than enough for a custom project.

Did a long range accuracy test.
The target was a ptt cabinet (a gray box) the visible size of 0,5×0,5 m (the bottom 0,5m was hidden due to grass).
The distance was 60m.

I emptied the entire magazine (19 rounds) and only two of them missed the box (90% ratio), and by only just. The majority (50%) was pretty much in the same spot (20 cm diameter), a few high fliers, and a few high-right fliers. Using a softer hop-up rubber and one with two nubs (I think the nineball is similar), I recon I would get even better results. Don't know if any aeg rubber has two nubs though ...

Note: I know there is a road in between and don't worry, I was careful. ;D

Also fixed the hop-up unit. When first machined, it was a bit over-sized and at the time, I fixed that with sanding it while spinning on  a drill. Off course that wasn't perfect and it wasn't aligned properly. Now I just lathed off just a bit of material and it sits perfect now.

This is a seriously impressive piece of work!

I love the trigger mech and how much more simple it is (or sounds) than the VSR style. And I guess I love the hop up design just as much... it's easy to make something that is complicated and works, but truly difficult for something simple to work just as well, or better.

Again nice job on the whole build.

Yeaaaa it sounded like his comments were lubed up with a lil sarcasm.. maybe because your different designed trigger mech basically describes his M-trigger mech operation if I recall correctly.

Anyways great work and I'm very impressed.  The stock looks very nice although it does look a bit on the bulky side in areas. How does the rear of the stock feel? It looks kinda chunky to sit well and feel comfortable in your shoulder pocket. Although it could just be that it looks bigger to me in the pictures.

 I also have to say it would look so much nicer, cleaner, and smoother with the magazine hidden. I understand the type of magazine you used and why you made it that way. But man would that look even better with it streamlined and hidden.  Not to mention, isn't that area where you want to rest your hand? Or do you hold in forward of the magazine?

 And what was the purpose of using AEG style buckings over vsr? Was it due to fabricating the hop up chamber or cause the barrel you had lying around?

Awesome craftsmanship and impressive results, considering you built it from scratch! I really don't mind the magazine that much.. its the nature of spring snipers I suppose. The only gripe I have about the gun is the ball on the bolt handle.. it's way huge and kinda looks funny.

This is very impressive!  The looks, the hop up design, don't know much about trigger mech design so I can't comment.  But this is a great build.  Wish I had the skills and equipment to do what you've done here.....

Thanks guys

@rosabi
I've checked Noobie's M-trigger and it looks it's pretty much the same. :) Even the internals look similar (someone posted a picture of it disassembled), the ratios of the levers are different though. However mine doesn't have magnetic return (just a spring), and only the piston sear and the spring guide pin are stainless, everything else is made out of delrin (POM), the sides are aluminum.

The stock does look bulky in the pictures, looks a bit smaller in reality. It's not that big either, the rear section is 11×3,3 cm. It will be shortened and a foam butt plate still needs to be mounted. It's not really comfortable since the spring pull is 20 kg (44 pounds), but it should be better with foam.

Yeah the magazine is exactly where you rest your hand, but it isn't too bad is you put the magazine on your palm and wrap your fingers around. This one will stay as it is, as there would be too much modifying needed to change the magazine. When I build the next one, I will post the design here so you can all give me ideas on improvements. :)

The AEG bucking is way cheaper and VSR buckings are difficult to obtain here. Also with a proper design, an aeg bucking should perform pretty much the same. Also because of the barrel. Don't know if I can even get a vsr barrel here (not cheap for certain).

@arryouhappy
The ball is 25mm and I think it's the same as on the L96. It doesn't look that bad, does it? :P I prefer the ball to a enlarged handle as on the vsr-10.

@me
I still need to figure out a way to lower the fps (without too much modification), so it can be field legal. I'm guessing a longer air brake. I wonder how silent I can make it. ;D

Excellent work sir, I like seeing jobs like these and then some. The use of aeg hop rubber is a solid choice, plus your lathe work is enviable. :)

gun looks great, I think the bolt handle and the stock look fine. just because a couple people say they are bulky doesnt mean they are or should be changed.

Spring return:
Notice the delrin ring on the spring guide pin which touches the cylinder instead of the pin.

Internals:
Doing it again, I would shorten the trigger lever. The force on the trigger sear is around 100N, and with a delrin-steel joint, the coefficient of friction is roughly 0,2. With a minimal lever on the trigger, the pull is thus 16N or 3,5 pounds. If there was a small ball bearing on the tip of the trigger sear, the trigger pull would be minimal.

@Noobie, are you being sarcastic?

I've checked Noobie's M-trigger and it looks it's pretty much the same.

It would read sarcastic if you had no clue what an M-Trig was. On purpose incase you simply neglected or just forgot to mention design similarities. Trust me, it would not have taken anything away from your work as there is plenty here to speak of.

I had my doubts, when you stated your work was based entirely on this :

To arrive at this:

With no inspiration gleaned whatsoever from this (M-trig):

With basically the same mechanical design, less material differences, this pretty much equals the borrowing of the concept/work/info… Which is fine and good… Except that you conveniently just looked at the M-Trig (afterwards)  ::)

I don’t know…. Maybe I just hold other people to an unrealistic ethical standard. Anyone who has read my articles/threads here on ASR will know that I try to insert a credit if anything I write about was based on, or inspired by someone else's work, or at very least a mention if what I write about is similar to another members on-going project. Furthermore, If I can’t recall where I read it, I will put forth “some” diligence in searching for the source before taking a risk of stepping on another contributing members toes. That is all in hopes of preserving this sense of community here on ASR where ideas are shared. Key word being “shared” by their perspective authors. This intent is to benefit the community by encouraging the flow of ideas and concepts, Not for the purpose of providing material for someone to take and call their own. That sort of behavior works in the exact opposite direction of a community based on sharing.

I’m not trying to say I’m the inventor of the wheel here, and much less the proprietor of any incarnation of a simplified sear release. But this particular one is clearly based on my M-Trig design, and if you hadn’t danced around that fact, I would have nothing but praise for your work as I began reading this thread with great admiration and respect because displayed here is more than enough demonstration of skill and respective accolades.

Anyrate, I waited a few days & a few posts to give the benefit of the doubt. I would have probably not posted on this thread again in order to leave it nice as it should deserve to be… Regrettably, since you asked I'll call it like I see it...
