Welcome to General Discussion
« on: February 03, 2011, 09:27:08 PM »

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Snicker emerged from his lair recently and decreed, in part due to our guests' behavior in the General Discussion Thread, that there shall be an NCO club.  In the club there are few restrictions on subject matter, unlike the rest of the forum sections.  However, every person who has interacted with others can reasonably be expected to know that there are 'hot button issues' that tend to spark people off, particularly if addressed with a snarky, disrespectful or downright mean fashion.

This forum encourages discussion but also insists that those who enjoy the Club also treat each other with a minimum of respect and decorum.

Welcome to ASR's NCO club, folks.  Pull up a chair and enjoy the company of your comrades.

So, has anyone read any good books lately?  I just started "The Gun" by C.J Chivers, not sure what to make of it yet.
I'm mainly reading it to starve off doing classwork, especially since I gotta sit through my 4 hour class yet again. :P

So, has anyone read any good books lately?

Just got started on "The Pacific" by Hugh Ambrose after getting through the HBO Mini-Series. Also working my way through "The Power Of The Dark Side" by Pamela Jaye Smith (Book pertains to screenwriting and the development of good villains, dark situations, etc) and just tossed "Black Hawk Down: A Story Of Modern War" by Mark Bowden on my Amazon list. Trying to get back into reading, been too lazy.

I'm reading George Carlin's posthumous autobiography Last Words right now.  Its pretty interesting to see how his career evolved from doing "Hippie-Dippie Weatherman" on variety shows to being arrested for "7 Dirty Words"

Good book. I'm a huge fan of his work, including (but not reserved to) his 7 dirty words. "Stuff" is probably my all time favorite, or the "Ten Commandments"...damn...too many to choose...

I'm about a quarter of the way through "The Great Gamble The Soviet War in Afghanistan" by Gregory Feifer, it's a fascinating read.

Anyone read Vince Flynn?  He's a great author who writes excellent fictional political and action novels.

Atilla, is that the "Licensed to Kill" one by Robert Pelton? I thought he did a good job bringing a non-sensationalist view to a topic many journalists like to bring the old "dogs of war" cliches to bear on.

I suggest 'About Face' by Lt Col Hackworth.

Also there's a good light sci fi series called 'Starfist' that is worth the time.

Oh please, you like those novels? I picked up one once, read 100 pages of some of the worst reading I've ever encountered, put it down and never picked up another. You want milsci, read the Halo novels, or I've heard good things about Hammer's Slammers and Ender's Game.

Ender's game and the Ender series are excellent, but the best writing I have ever read was done by a member here years ago.

Just watched SALT.  The only thing I learned is, everyone is a Russian spy, EVERYONE... "shifty eyes"

I just finished "Delta Force" by Ret. Col. Charlie Beckwith, gives great insight into how and why the unit was created. Starting on "It's your Ship" by Capt. D Micheal Abrashoff.

By the way, I'm a Captain now, have been for 46 posts. where's the Officer's Club? :P

on an unrelated note, firefight arcade is back on Halo:Reach for good. so If your dislike the POS player vs player matchmaking online try playing firefight matchmaking with 2X overshields, rockets, swords, hammers, increased damage and unlimited lives. you wont be disappointed.

Fire Fight Arcade is all i play when im on REACH.....which isn't very often.

Who knew that you could get the Avatar helmets (that you would normally pay for) for free when you complete challenges for them in firefight and campaign?

same here atleast when the playlist was up, after checking the game online they arent up yet but will be back in the next couple of weeks or so. :( guess its back to forge.

firefight limited is fun too because of the limited lives, being the last man standing and defending your entire team from hordes of enemies is a real rush.

Aside from The Bourne Identity, Robert Ludlum sucks.

Tom Clancy is my 2nd favorite author, but some of his novels, especially lately, are plodding and uninspired. Rainbow Six is amazing, though. A lot of people probably think I have Rainbow Six as my avatar because I'm a gamer. I don't own a single game or any platform. I love the novel enough that I've worn a "Rainbow" patch with my loadout for years.

I can't recommend Stephen Hunter highly enough. Start with Point of Impact and read in order. I read a fair bit, and I can guarantee you he will blow your mind with his Bob Lee Swagger and Earl Swagger novels. No, not every one is grand slam, but unlike Clancy, even Hunters worst novels move fast and keep you entertained. He also goes out of his way to get all the little things about rifles and shooting culture right on.

After a bit of searching, apparently it was Troy Aikman, not Joe Buck, who gave a shout-out to Luttrell; my bad. Right after halftime they announced the MOH winner, and Troy added something about Luttrell. He said Marcus had spoken at a NFL leadership conference or something. Apparently both Aikman and Luttrell are also involved in this:

So, anyone else watch Larry's new show on the History Channel premier last night?  I couldn't help myself, and it was decent.  Comedy mixed in with the history you do not get taught in history class.
