Mystery residue left behind on WE m1911?
« on: March 23, 2011, 05:34:57 PM »

Every time that I disassemble my WE m1911 meu for maintenance, I always notice this dark residue that has the consistency of the silicone oil I use. I always clean it off but it keeps coming back! Could it be from the propane or silicone oil? Should I be worried about this?

Most likely you are over oiling your mags. That oil gets blown out the mag into the blowback chamber every time you fire, which isn't bad for the gun, but does tend to coat your hopup bucking with oil, making it far less effective than it should be. And it leaks out everywhere. You only need to add oil to the mags once every 8-10 fills, at most. I actually don't add oil to fills, I oil the mags while they are empty and then fill them and hit the valve to blow out any excess. The seals only need a very small amount of oil to stay properly lubricated.

Another possibility is that it could also be oil that was intentionally put into the hammer and trigger mech to lube it, that just hasn't finished working its way out yet.

When I work on a GBB pistol I always shoot a little spray (low viscosity) silicone lube into the hammer and trigger mech and then cycle/work them repeatedly, feeling for grit or dirt in the mech, until the lube doesn't come out any more. But I only spray a very small amount in there and I clean it up after, someone at the factory may have sprayed a lot of higher viscosity oil in there and it's just taking a long time to come out.

But most likely it's you overlubing your mags.  ;)

That isnt uncommon, oil should turn that color as it is picking up debris as the moving parts wear.

hmmm, now that I think of it I did lube the magazine with several quick sprays before this problem started. Well thanks a bunch!  :) I also coat a layer of silicone to the slide before putting the barrel in and some more on the barrel since I was noticing a lot of paint scraping off. Does this affect the performance negatively?

Like Molder said, it's normal wear. Painted inner barrels is just generally a bad idea, since they will always wear off at the end and around the chamber, where it comes in contact with the slide. They paint the barrels on RS pistols and they wear in the same places.

Any time you lube the gun you should always cycle that part repeatedly, wipe it down, and repeat until the oil doesn't come out anymore. That way you aren't leaking oil into your holster, gun case, or whatever else you put the gun in.

It might be oxidized silicone oil, in which case it shouldn't be left on too long.
