Kwa M4 Cqb Spring/Fps?
« on: March 30, 2011, 11:50:35 PM »

Ive got a Kwa M4 cqb, and I have heard the fps is in the 340s not because of the spring (the 400 fps spring), but because of the cylinder head. Is this true, in that case would I be best off ordering a new cylinder head from the Kwa Proshop?

Thanks

Its not the cylinder head. The low FPS is due to the forward port on the cylinder and the shorter inner barrel. If you want to boost your FPS, I would recommend a longer inner barrel (covered by an external mock silencer or something similar) with smaller inner diameter and a SR12/SR10 cylinder.

Although now that I think about it, all 2GX gearboxes might be using the same cylinder. You can always take a peek at the cylinder by opening the upper receiver. If the port is all the way to the back of the cylinder (i.e. towards the rear of the rifle) then you do not have to replace the cylinder.

I also recommend you check out the KWA forums for KWA specific questions. The mods/admins there are very knowledgeable about their products (no duh right?) and helped me a great deal in tuning my gearbox for maximum efficiency.

I hope this helps!

it is a m90-100 spring inside the gearbox. Im leaning torward the m100 since i stretched the oring on mine and it is shooting 340 with a .23.

I have seen both SR12s and full length M16s with ported cylinders.  It was strange to say the least.  I haven't worked on enough KWAs to say for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are all the same cylinders in all their guns.

Yes I checked and its a port towards the rear of the cylinder. So with a longer barrel I should be getting higher FPS?

However, in CQB, right around 340 is just about right...

I dont understand, does it have a different cylinder head that lowers the air flow? Or is it just the short barrel.

It's just the short barrel. There could also be a different spring in it. Replacing it with a longer barrel will, if what you said about the cylinder is true, increase the fps by a small percentage. The cylinder head is the same on the KWA 2gx models I believe.

So the spring is the culprit for the low fps? Would the cylinder I have now work with a M14 length barrel  (455 mm)?

I can't be absolutely sure because you don't sound very sure that the cylinder was the same as would be used in a longer barrel setup. However, if the cylinder did have the port rather far back, then the M14 barrel should work.

Use an AK barrel, not m14, m14 barrels are cut differently.
