EdGI Sniper Rifle Upgrade Kits Photo Review (MP001)Discuss this review in the forums.
Many of you have been curious about these new kits, and EdGI was kind enough to send me one to review. Those of you who are airsofters in the Philippines already know EdGI's work, but for those of us in the United States and the UK, EdGI isn't as well known as other sellers, such as dbcustom. EdGI makes upgrade kits so that our previously un-upgradeable sniper rifles, like the M324 and MP001, can shoot 500-600 fps. Without further ado, I present the EdGI Upgrade Kit review!

First Impressions and Build Quality
Everything is very well-made, and looks superb, and the nozzle fits perfectly into the hopup with no need for teflon tape to help seal it. Here's what you get inside the package:

Notice there's some nice PVC piping for use as mock suppressors
The upgrade barrel is superb, and along with the sears, at this point my favorite part of the kit:

Notice the little o-ring in the barrel--that makes the seal with the hopup great, so you don't need to do any tefloning. One point of interest--it is too wide for stock barrel spacers, and it doesn't come with any. I'd really like it if it did, but for now, I'll just use some duct tape to make the barrel fit. It's also slightly too long to fit into the endcap, which will have to be drilled out. I don't have a drill capable of that at the moment, so I've replaced the endcap with a cap made from the PVC endcap that came with the package. Still, the barrel is great quality, and offers comparable accuracy to the dbcustom one that I had before, so it's got very good performance.
Some side notes: the BAR-10 barrel does not come with the O-ring, and EdGI barrels will not fit into the stock barrel spacers. For the MP001 barrel, you'll have to either bore out the endcap, or else make some of your own spacers--duct tape works great for that. The BAR-10 barrel fits nicely into the endcap, so barrel spacers are not required. Here's some pictures of the BAR-10 barrel:

Although the barrel is too thick to fit the spacers, it's still very well made, and has been sanded down where necessary to make it fit properly. It's made of high quality brass, and fits perfectly. The thicker barrel also reduces vibrations, which makes the barrel last longer. It's also slightly longer than the stock barrel:

It fits nicely into the endcap, so it doesn't require barrel spacers:

Interestingly enough, my gun also seems to sound quieter, although that's probably because of the Laylax silent damper cylinder head that I installed... Anyways, the barrels are amazingly good quality, and a definite great buy. Unlike other tightbore barrels, EdGI has engineered the barrels to maximize performance, hence why the MP001 barrel is longer. I expect in future kits he will sand the end so it will fit in the endcap, as he did with the BAR-10 barrel. That little feature is a very nice touch.
EdGI also has a ported tightbore bull barrel as well, which has three sets of three holes neatly drilled into it. I speculate that this may reduce power slightly, but it also bleeds a lot of the sound out into the barrel. I wrapped some foam around it, and it does seem to slightly reduce the noise from the muzzle. That being said, with an EdGI piston and SP01 installed, it's almost deafening from close range with the normal barrel, since the kits have such good compression.

One thing to note is that, while this barrel also had the end machined down, it didn't fit as well as the other barrel he sent me, so it was a tight fit into the endcap. I had to unscrew it slightly, then use some pliers to screw it back in again. Here's a closer look at the porting:

You'll be happy to know that the accuracy is identical no matter which barrel you have installed. These barrels are also thicker than PDI barrels, so although the inner tolerances may not be as good, since I don't think they're laser cut steel barrels, they still maintain comparable accuracy. These barrels are a good deal thicker than dbcustom barrels also, which means that they have less vibration issues.
Some of you may be asking why vibration is a problem. When you fire your gun, the impact of the gun sends little vibrations through the gun, and the movement of the barrel affects the trajectory of the bb. Thicker barrels have less vibration effect, and hence greater accuracy. EdGI barrels are the thickest barrels on the market.
That being said, let's get everything installed!
Installation Guide
Let's get to installation of the cylinder. You're going to need to unscrew the Torx screw on the back of the bolt-handle, and remove it. Here's what you're looking to take off:

Go ahead and attach that part onto the back of the new cylinder, being sure not to lose the little spring and clicky part in the back cap of the bolt-handle. I actually lost mine at some point when I was having issues with the bolt handle coming off because the back of the cylinder wasn't threaded correctly, and it still works, but it's a nice little touch to have it click back and forth, and it makes things easier. Here's the new cylinder by the old cylinder:

Alright, the final thing to do is install the new sear set. You get two sears, the piston sear, and the trigger sear that the piston sear goes into. You don't get the safety sear or spring guide stopper. More's the pity, but you don't really need the other parts, since the piston sear is the one that takes most of the stress, and breaks over time. So, we need to disassemble our trigger assembly:

Before you remove the sears, take CAREFUL note of how that little spring that's inside the big sear fits against the piston sear. It took me some time to figure out how to install that with the EdGI kit. Here's the sear set installed:

Actually, that's a pic from when I installed the spring wrong. You want the sear forced up by the spring, so that it will engage the piston. The sears are made of very nice quality steel.
The spring guide is made out of nice quality aluminum, from what it looks like, and the cylinder is brass. The springs are very strong, and it's a bit challenging to get it put back together when you have the 600 fps spring installed. Here's some shots that EdGI sent me, which look better than the ones that I took:

To open the cylinder, you need to use a thin screwdriver to knock out the little pin at the back of the cylinder. Then you can unscrew the back of the cylinder. Install the spring, replace the spring guide, and screw it back in. That's the trickiest part, I suggest setting the back of the cylinder down on the floor with the spring facing up, and using your body weight to compress the spring as you screw it in. I had issues with the length of the spring in my kit; EdGI is addressing that problem in future kits.
Performance
The performance is, not surprisingly, very good. I decided to give it a test at 150 feet instead of 100 feet this time, and to test with AE .28's. Here's the result:

The grouping was staggeringly good. The bull barrel decreases vibration, which really closes up the groupings, and the extra length really makes a difference. The grouping was a full 8 inches better than the stock barrel grouping at that range, which was bad enough that I didn't even bother posting it back when I still had the stock barrel in the MP001. The stock MP001 barrel gets pretty inconsistent past 100 feet. The cylinder parts performed flawlessly, although I have to say, there's definitely much more of a kick to the rifle, so it's a bit harder to keep your shots precisely on target, unless you're using your adductors to help keep your body in proper form.
Final Analysis
All in all, the kits are very nice, although I'm guessing I got a lemon cylinder the first time. I only got off about 100 shots before the cylinder back stripped, preventing me from being able to cock it again. This was due to the use of an incorrect size of threading. EdGI sent me a new cylinder body, which screws in perfectly, and shouldn't strip, so this problem will be addressed in future kits as well. The sears and barrel are perfect, and very well designed.
Anyways, the performance with the kit installed is very good. One thing to note is that the gun is much louder, and the bolt-pull is MUCH stiffer with both springs. I'm not a terribly weak person, and it's noticeably more difficult not only to cock, but also to get the piston to go forward. Most of these issue were not reported in the reviews I read from Philippine owners, so I'm not sure what the issue is. EdGI has been very good about CS, so if you do get a lemon kit, I'm sure he'll be happy to work with you. Mine actually stripped the rear of the cylinder, causing the bolt handle to come off. EdGI sent me a brand new cylinder body free of cost, along with another better quality spring guide, free of cost. That's superb CS for you! Here's what he sent:

The kit is now working flawlessly with the new parts. EdGI also takes the time to personalize the cylinders, which is very very nice. He engraved TCF on mine (The Crimson Falcon), and other kits have also been personalized.

These little touches make it a real pleasure to do business with EdGI, and the bling factor of the gold cylinder should not be overlooked either. Here's some shots of my rifle with EdGI kit installed:

My final word on these kits, after dealing with EdGI and getting all of my upgrade parts is that his kits really can't be beat. I love the tightbores (possibly even more than my dbcustom barrels), and the materials and CS are absolutely excellent. It's been a real pleasure dealing with EdGI, even despite the initial lemon kit that I received, and having weeded out these problems, I would expect future kits to be great. I would love to see him get Paypal or take credit cards, but the kits themselves are definitely worth buying.
