1 - The Real Deal:
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/ump45.jpg
"Newest on the HK scene is the UMP Submachine Gun. Little brother to the G36 in design, the UMP is the latest attempt by HK to produce more affordable, yet still sophisticated weapons designs. The UMP is in the $850 area for Law Enforcement. The folding stock and largely plastic frame and internal parts rely heavily on G36 design. UMP stands for Universal Machinenpistole, a name inspired undoubtedly by the USP series.

The gun features a straight blowback design that fires from a closed bolt for excellent first shot accuracy. The gun is currently available with an ambidextrous 'Navy' trigger group featuring safe-semi-full automatic fire, and plans are for a safe-semi-two shot burst only and semi automatic only groups as well.

The magazines that are available hold 10 or 25 rounds of 45 ACP ammunition. Advertised cyclic rates are 580 rpm with 230 grain ball, and 700 rpm with 185 grain +P ammunition.

In .40 caliber and 9mm, the UMP magazines hold 30 rounds. The .40 caliber UMP is for sale in the United States. At this writing, it is unknown if/when the 9mm model will be imported into the U.S.

One of the greatest features of the largely polymer design is the weight, or lack of it. The UMP only weighs 4.63 pounds empty!"

2 - Quick Info:
Made By: Double Eagle
Price: I paid $130 at a local shop (Airsoft Atlanta), but I've found sites that sell it for as little as $80 (w/o shipping)
FPS: 350-370 w/ .2g BBs (Initial shots at the shop registered 328, 335, 350 w/ .20g bbs)
Weight: 8.8 Lbs or 4 Kgs
Features: Metal Gearbox, a version 3 mechbox, adjustable hop-up, semi/full auto
Interesting Fact: Complete G&G replica - meaning it will take the G&G UMG mags and suppressor

3 - Reason for Buying:
The UMP is my favorite gun (as you can tell from my name), and as such couldn’t wait for a replica to come out. There have only been three to my knowledge - the G&G UMG, the STAR UMP, and the DE M89. Being a college student, living away from home, and having a girlfriend I didn't really have the cash to afford the G&G or the STAR. So as you can imagine I was extremely excited to hear the Double Eagle made a complete G&G replica for a whole lot cheaper.

4 - Side Note:
I was very hesitant to buy an airsoft gun made by Double Eagle. I previously bought a DE M83A1 as my first airsoft gun online. I'll let you guys look it up, but I can save you the time and just let you know that it's a horrible weapon and any and all of them should be burnt, destroyed, and sent to the nearest dump. So, when I heard that DE made a UMP I was extremely excited for the price, but had the horrible experience of the M83 in my head. So I waited, until I went out to Atlanta, and made a stroll over to Airsoft Atlanta. There I learned a good deal about the gun...so much so it convinced me to buy it, and here we are with the review.

Also, TSD is not the manufacturer of the gun, they simply rebrand the gun under their name. The actual manufacturer for this airsoft gun is Double Eagle.

5 - First Impressions/Externals:
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/Box.jpg
The box the gun came in was pretty impressive lots of graphics, and a bit of information about the gun on the front.

What matters though is what is under the box...Although the box says other wise...In the box was: 1 Hi-cap 300 round mag, a tactical sling, battery, charger, a pretty sweet pair of tactical goggles, and the gun. Also with a special running with Airsoft Atlanta I received a free JBU Red Cross Scope.

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/Gun.jpg
The gun is made of a very durable ABS plastic - so durable it pretty much feels like metal. The actual metal parts are the: trigger, receiver, hop-up, selector switch, RIS rails, and the slider. Over all I was very impressed with the body of the gun, you can hardly tell which parts are metal and which parts aren’t. The only problem I had with the exterior of the gun was the magazine. It seems to be made of your run of the mill cheap-o plastic, which off sets the niceness of the body. Also with the body of the gun, it's very plain and has little detail to it. Although the real UMP has little detail to it as well, Double eagle did little in the terms of decals other then their logo, a "Made in china" area, and the fire selector decals.

A side note on the RIS rails - The bottom RIS rail is a good place to put a forward grip, however the mag holder gets in the way if you have a sliding grip. Either you have to get a grip that has the screw in side, or force it on. As the RIS rails are made of metal it doesn’t hurt the gun by trying to force it, your grip on the other hand may suffer.

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/GunandMag.jpg

The gun is a very decent weight - weighing a little over 8 pounds (4 Kg). As the gun is a SMG it is compact and light weight enough to be used in a CQB situation, but is also large enough to be a good weapon for out door use as well. However, the gun can feel very bulky at times, and can feel a little over weight. Basically, it's the design of the gun that makes it that way. The UMP is a unique weapon, so don’t let the initial quirkiness of it put you down to not buying it if you shop at a local store. All it takes is time to get used to the bulkiness of it, and to get a good feel for it.

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/FoldingStock.jpg
The gun, like its real counter part has a folding stock, which also reveals the battery storage area. The battery is a little tricky to get into the gun the first time, but with practice eventually you can get it in no problems.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/BatteryStorage2.jpghttp://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/BatteryStorage.jpg

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/RecieverandRails.jpg
The cocking lever pulls back, which in turn pulls back the slider which reveals the hop-up. The hop up is pretty extreme, with little movements. Really it's best just to leave it in the center.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/Hopup.jpg

As far as I can tell, and according to all the websites - this gun is a 100% G&G UMG clone. Externals are all the same except for trade marks, and the like. One diffrence that was pointed out is that the G&G UMG and the DE M89 upper and lower recievers are not compatible due to diffrent pins that DE uses. As far as internals go, I think they may be the same set-up, but they used a little bit cheaper parts for the internals. However, being a UMG clone this also means that the TSD UMP is also compatible with the G&G mags and the G&G suppressor.

6 - Internals
The internals include a version 3 mechbox, a metal gear box, metal hop-up chamber, nylon bushings and all together was well assembled. The piston is attached to the spring, mauri style. However, you have to remember this is a clone china gun, and as such most of the parts seem pretty cheap, but seem like they will hold out through a few skirmishes. Since this is a "China" gun you'll defiantly want to look in to upgrading them if you plan on keeping the gun as your primary rifle.

"The shimming on this gun is reminiscent of the old UTG MP5s. Each gear has the same shim on each side and was overall WAY undershimmed. Some of the shims were warped/bent as well.

For the bushings, the inner diameter of them was way too tight. Either sand the inside of them out a bit to let the gears spin freely or just replace them.

Spring is linear and attached to the piston, as you said. The cylinder head looks to be like those found in CYMA guns and the air nozzle didn't seal very well. The piston/cylinder seal was excellent however. Spring guide is plastic.

There is no fuse included with the gun.

The bucking in the hop-up chamber is really thick (by bucking I mean the nub) and caused over-hopping with mine, even on the lowest setting. Fixed it by sanding away some of the hop-up arm and replacing the nub. There is very little adjustability with the hop-up and although it looks to be very well made it is a flawed design and needs some mods to get it working properly."

7 - Performance:
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/DowntheSights.jpg
The gun shoots very decently for a china gun. The only qualms I have are the sights. They are a little hard to line up, and typically I'll miss the first few rounds if I'm using the sights. Being a bulky gun, it's a little hard to aim even with out the sights. Just takes a little getting used to, and you'll find your spot for hitting the target.

During an indoor test at 35 ft. with 10 rounds I hit the target every round the first 2 where outside the target every other hit center(ish). Unfortunately I have no pictures of the test. I'll work on getting another test ASAP and get some pics in.

As stated above the gun shoots very decent FPS with .20g BBs. Currently after putting some rounds through it I'm at about 340 FPS with .20g BBs.

There are some feeding problems with the gun. Sometimes I'll be able to fire off all 300 rounds with out a hitch, other's I'll have to fire 20 rounds, rewind, or pull the mag out all together, and give it a little shake. Also with the mag, you have to have over 50 rounds in it at any time. When the mag gets down to about 20 rounds, it has a spring issue where it cant feed them up to the gun, and winding wont help anything.

Another little problem is the safety won’t always work, and will keep the gun in semi-auto when the fire selector is placed on to safe. There is a quick fix to this though. Just lower the fire selector down to full, and back up to safe, and it should place it back into safe, and set the trigger so it won’t fire.

8 - Field Report:
I tested this gun in one skirmish during Op: Sudden Strike. The skirmish lasted for 3 hours, and I will say that the gun held up very nicely. Here is a little Pro/Con run down of what went good, what went bad.

The Good:
The weapon performed a little over my expectations - meaning I knew it was a china gun, and didn't expect it to run at par with other guns. However, it did run very smoothly for the duration of the game. The gun had a little higher effective range (about 50ft.) then I thought it would. It performed well in range, considering there were high winds. I didn't expect the range to be all that great, considering it is a SMG, and not meant for long range play. It was an all out door game, so still don’t know how it performs in CQB. I felt the gun was the best in terms of weight compared to my other weapons (CA Mp5 A5 and DBoys M4). During the game I didn’t feel like the weight of the gun hindered me in any way. All in all the gun was very easy to use, and I had little problems with it through out the game...but that doesn't mean I didn't have any problems.

The Bad:
I noticed one or two different problems with the gun during field testing. One was that the mag didn't always feed the BB's into the gun. I got killed a few times due to BBs not feeding properly. A second problem was that the gun did not always fire in the Semi-auto selection. I would pull the trigger, but the gun didn't fire. I don't know what would be causing this; as it happened through out the game, from fresh battery to almost empty. The final problem I saw was the stock battery was completely dead by the end of the round. I would look into perhaps getting another battery other then the stock one, as it didn't last half as long as my other AEGs.

9 - Pros/Cons:
Pros:
VERY Durable Body
Metal Parts
Ver. 3 Mechbox
Metal Gear Box
340+ FPS w/ .20 g BBs
Good accuracy
Several metal parts
Well worth the price
Good CQB and Outdoor gun
Includes a cool pair of tac goggles

Cons:
Cheap-o plastic Mag
Feeding Issues
"Made in China"
Gun is visually uninteresting
Battery is tricky to insert
Bulky, heavy, and some times awkward gun to shoot
Lower RIS rail - tricky to add attachments

10 - Overall:
Body: 8/10
Durable body, and metal parts get it a high rating, but the plastic mag, and visually uninteresting parts nock it down 2 points
Performance: 9/10
Good fps, accuracy, and range give it high markings, just a few feeding problems give it -1 point
Internals: 7/10
Here's where that "Made in China" part kicks your but. The internals aren't the best on the market, but will get you through unless you upgrade.

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd56/Ump45/Final2.jpg

Overall I could care less about the internals, I was looking for a UMP replica, and I found one. To me there are far more pros then there are cons. I was VERY happy with my purchase and am looking forward to field testing it come Saturday.

11 -Final Pic:

Attached the JBU Red Cross Scope and a forward grip
With Tac Vest, Crossman CO2 pistol, and the cool pair of tac googles
Smile Enjoy

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Stock is sturdy, mag fits snug, full metal gear box
Cons: High-cap mags jam, battery space is tight.

A good overall starter gun, very realistic weight and feel, the paint looks good but wears easily. I would advise getting a better battery or at least a spare, the stock one only lasts about 150 shots on semi and only about 125 on full auto. Rate of fire is pretty good, around 10-12 shots per second. I've put over 1200 rounds through it with no problems yet.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Amazing gun for the price!
Cons: 8.4 Volts aren't enough for this gun!

For the price, It's absolutely excellent! The barrel is only maybe 12" long, but it out ranges several people's guns! (shoots further and straighter than a stock Tokyo Marui AUG) Tight bore pre-installed maybe? The battery that comes with this gun doesn't cut it! I'm guessing this gun was designed to shoot with a 9.6V battery, but a 9.6V stick type battery won't fit in this gun unless you keep the stock folded! Not a big issue, just tape a 9.6V to the side, or remove the battery compartment door and it will be able to fit with the stock in position.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): solid weight and feel, high accuracy, 2 x hi-cap mags included, foldable stock
Cons: plastic hi-cap mags feel lightweight/cheap, small / cramped battery compartment

I picked this up over at ASGI instead of a replacement v3 E1 v3 complete gearbox since it was only $20 more and very glad I did.

The package includes a cheap sling, 2 x 300-round hi-caps, dumb charger, an ASGI chrono confirming 335fps, the UMP itself with the battery installed, and a manual.

After removing the shrink-wrap off the foam bottom, I picked up the UMP. For a sub-$100 SMG it is quite heavy and feels very solid. I grabbed the mag and was a bit surprised how light it was, how cheap it felt and how flimsy the bb loading door felt. Despite this I was very pleased to see a second mag underneath it, was unexpected. After removing the BB loader, jamming rod, dumb charger, and sling from the packaging I was at a loss since I could not find the battery - until I folded the stock and opened the battery compartment and was relieved it was already installed.

Removing the battery revealed an unexpected surprise, the battery connector hot lead had a pinched & broken insulation - but no wire strands were damaged or broken so I was able to calm down slightly after spitefully saying "double eagle" and rolling my eyes, and repaired it with a 1" cut of electrical tape and a mini-zip tie.

I unpacked the hitech smart charger I had ordered along with the UMP, and set it up for 300mA slow charge and 7 cell battery... 5 hours later I got impatient and set it for 600mA and it indicated full about 20mins after that.

After a quick barrel cleaning, I grabbed the cheap-feeling mag and opened up the BB loading hatch. After murmuring "my BE LPEG mags feel nicer than this" I loaded up 300 .2g rounds. I was pleased not to feel a sharp pain when winding it up (without gloves on), it is a nice, wide and smooth-grooved wheel. Inserting the mag gave some resistance, and it needed a "slap" to get it fully inserted - some real-steel mag-insertion realism Smile

Firing off a few rounds, I noticed the gearbox sounds quite smooth, just as good as my JG M4A1 basic - no chattering, rattling or excessive binding that I can hear. It is a bit quieter than my JG, most likely due to the lower spring / fps & less strain.

Since my townhouse basement is limited to 25' max target range I got less than 1" groupings and it was very close to the reticle (best I can do at the moment)

At this price, it is arguably the best price/performance beginner AEGs (or one of them Smile

cheers
