KWA Mac 11 NS2 review by XavierMace
Discuss this review here.
Real Steel History (Courtesy of wikipedia.com)
The Ingram MAC-11 (Military Armament Corporation Model 11) is a machine pistol developed by American gun designer Gordon Ingram at the Military Armament Corporation (MAC) during the 1970s. The weapon is a sub-compact version of the Model 10 (MAC-10), and is chambered to fire the smaller .380 ACP round.
This weapon is sometimes confused with the Sylvia & Wayne Daniels M-11/9 or the Vulcan M-11-9, both of which are later variants of the MAC chambered for 9 mm Luger Parabellum cartridge.
Basic Information
The KWA Mac-11 reviewed here is the new version of their Mac-11 with the enhanced NS2 gas system. The gun is a select fire gas blow back sub-machine gun. The gun can be used with green gas or 134a.
Product Description/first Impressions:
The gun comes in a nice bright, colorful, box that features a picture of the gun on the front along with a basic run down of it's features. The box is sturdy and does a nice job of protecting the gun.
Inside you will find the gun, one magazine, a package of BB's, manual, hopup adjustment tool, and a bottle of silicone lube. The manual is well done and very detailed. The gun is overall quite a bit smaller than most people think. Many people think it's about the size of an Uzi, but it's about half that large.
Externals
The externals are quite nice with no creaks or wobbles. There's not much in the way of markings on the gun, save for the selector and safety switches. Unlike most guns, these are two separate switches.
The safety switch is located on the right side of the gun, right by the trigger. It's small enough that it doesn't get in the way when using the gun, but big enough that you can easily switch it on and off as needed.
The selector switch has two settings, semi and full, since the gun has a separate safety. The selector is located on the left side of the gun, all of the way at the front. As with the safety, it's nice and easy to adjust (with your off hand) while using the gun.
Internals
The internals on the gun are pretty much all metal save for the nozzle which is to be expected. The parts have black finish on pretty much everything, but friction wears a lot of it off pretty quickly.
The hammer and everything looks nice and solid as you can see above, but the wear is most visible on the bolt assembly. Even after 1,000 rounds or so, the black is pretty worn down in a lot of places. That's pretty normal for gas powered guns, it just happens quicker than on some others because of the higher ROF.
My review sample has an updated nozzle compared to the first run of the NS2 versions due to a failure on the nozzle. If your nozzle fails, contact KWA USA and they will take care of you.
The recoil spring is nice and long which is part of what allows it to maintain such a high rate of fire. The bolt itself is nice and solid and well machined. Taking the gun down enough to clean and lube it is a breeze.
Power/Magazines
The gun is designed to use green gas by default. You could also use HFC134A or Propane but make sure to keep the gun properly lubed if using the latter. The included magazine holds 48 rounds, is full metal, and features a follower lock that greatly improves the ease of loading. The follower seems to have a bit of play in it, so getting the full mag capacity takes a little effort sometimes. But this doesn't seem to effect the functionality of the gun.

Performance Characteristics:
This gun was designed for one purpose and that is to spray BB's. The gun accomplishes that very well. The gun chrono'd between 335fps-375fps (Green Gas), averaging right about 351fps. Rate of Fire is where this gun really shines coming in at 29.7-36.8rps (Green Gas). You can't help but giggle every time you hold the trigger. That combined with the fact it fires from an open bolt just makes it an enormously fun gun to shoot. The gas performance of the gun is just about perfect in the sense that I have not had it fail to empty the entire mag in one trigger pull. The gun just barely starts cooling down ever so slightly right at the end of the mag.

Gas Spewing from the bolt
In addition to the gun firing from an open bolt, it also locks open on low mag pressure (ie from cool down) to prevent misfires or gas release as well as locking open on empty. It's really nice having a full auto gas gun that's so reliable. Accuracy is alright for a gas powered SMG, could be better, could be worse.
The gun seemed to like .25's better than .20's even after fiddling with the hopup. Still not spectacular groupings, but quite ample for it's designed purpose. However, the gun did seem to perform a bit better on full auto than it did on semi auto.
Accessories/Modifications
EDGI is working on a tightbore barrel for the gun and Polarstar is working on making a mock silencer for it (may be available at some retailers already). Unfortunately, it is unknown at this time if the first generation steel receiver kits will work. Expect to see some parts from KWA both internal and external though for the Mac11.
Upgrades:
At this time, no upgrades are available for the gun but once the product has had time to mature, I would expect to see no shortage of parts both from KWA and 3rd party manufacturers.
Skirmish Results
Despite the guns frighteningly high rate of fire, I have yet to have the gun jam or misfeed. Nor has the gun failed to empty it's mag. It really is quite the impressive gun and in close quarters is a gun to be reckoned with. The sound of the gun firing is enough to get people to duck.
Conclusion:
The gun is simply a blast to play with. It's hardly a woodland gun but for CQB or just playing around in the back yard, you will be hard pressed to find a gun that's more fun to play with. On top of that, it's reliable to boot. Plan on keeping yourself well stocked on gas though.
End Notes:
Many thanks for KWA USA for providing the gun for review. More pictures are available on my site here.
